Is PRP a Plausible Hair Loss Treatment For You?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a hair loss treatment therapy that started in the 1970s and is still around today. But is it right for you? The whole procedure takes about an hour, according to the AAD. Here's what you need to know about PRP treatment therapy.

What Is PRP Therapy for Hair Loss?

PRP treatment therapy is where platelet-rich plasma is taken from your blood and injected into the scalp. PRP contains growth factor proteins that will regenerate tissue growth. The science behind the therapy believes that this will trigger hair growth as hair follicles down die when there is a loss of hair.

About the PRP Treatment Therapy

In PRP treatment therapy, there will be about one or two ounces of your blood drawn. It is then put into a centrifuge to spin to separate the plasma from the blood cells. Then this newly spun plasma is injected into separate areas of the scalp. There are typically 40-50 of these injections that are given in a session. The scalp is numbed with a topical anesthetic first for less pain and sensation. The therapy takes about an hour with a quick recovery. Some people may have redness afterward or a little swelling but those side effects go away in a day or so.

PRP Therapy Candidates

This type of treatment is good for those with androgenic alopecia, which is more commonly referred to as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. It is also recommended for those with alopecia areata, which is an auto-immune condition. It is less effective in conditions like lupus that leave scalp scarring because hair follicles are unable to be reactivated with scarring. It may also not be the choice if you have inflamed skin due to suppressed immune system or psoriasis. After discussing your needs and conditions, you may have PRP treatment therapy alone or combined with another hair loss treatment. Your total medical history will be needed to see what is right for you.
